Quizzard Alert!! A quiz fit for a king! Quizmaster Cup VIII recap!

It was another day for the (middle) ages at the Milwaukee Ale House this Sunday November 11th, 2012, as over 100 of Wisconsin's most noble queeps, as well as numerous ruffians, converged upon Quizmaster Cup VIII, all with dreams of taking away the coveted chalice and gold medals...

(And don't forget that more photos from the day - about 140 of them - can be found at our Facebook page)!

As well as the the medals and trophy (which were forged in the fires of Mount Doom), Quizmaster was also offering teams the chance to win cases of Milwaukee Brewing Co. beer, Smirnoff vodka (with each team getting a bottle for just being there), Star Wars calenders (courtesy of ThinkGeek), as well as the fabled BOX OF BRITISHNESS, which contained royal goodies (literally!) from across the pond...

And in what has been the case for most Quizmaster Cups to date, the hosts encouraged teams to come dressed up in their best ROYAL attire for a chance to win the Box of Britishness. The Quizmasters had a medieval theme going themselves...

Bibbidi-Bobiddi-BOO!!

Once such team - Squad 666, who never disappoint, came dressed up as a royal flush and even had their very own dealer...

Oh, what a bunch of cards! ZING!

One of them, seamstress extraordinaire, Sun Dunfee, even had a custom Quizmaster Ace playing card...

Hopefully they had an ace in the bag to help them out with the day's epic game.

That reminds us, amazing prizes and outfits aside, there was a day of quizzin' (to the death) to be had....

And so the Cup got underway like a puff of smoke with the MINUTE OF MUSIC MADNESS round - now the customary way to start the tournament...

Teams has to name as many songs and artists as they could, with the answers being revealed (via video) just a few minutes later....

That round was from a maximum total of 20 points, with no team able to score a perfect 100 percent, despite the multiple Swedish House Mafia fans in tha hizzle!!

Teams Miltown Junks and Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's a Blatant Attempt to Curry Favour with the British Judge scored the highest in that section with 18 points each, while Quizmaster Cup newcomers Many things can be preserved in alcohol; dignity is not one of them got a taste of the day's affair taking in 10 points in round one...

Following the opening video round, the first Drink While You Think bracket got underway, in which a member from four teams had to chug a whole beer before they could answer a Family Feud-style question....

The first questions asked drinkers to NAME A FOOD THAT IS GREEN?

Following Quizmaster's very own survey of 50 people, the top answers were:

  1. 18 - Broccoli
  2. 08 - Green beans
  3. 07 - Spinach
  4. 04 - Peas
  5. 03 - Asparagus, Apples
  6. 02 - Lettuce
  7. 01 - Avocado, Grapes, Peppers, Cabbage, Lime

Team Fuckin' Wolverine's drinkin' solider moved on to the Final Four (having got the top answer) for a chance to win the 8 cases of Milwaukee Brewing Co. beer later on...

More quizzin' resumed with the gang from Perfect Pints scoring pretty strongly in the lightning round...

And then another drink while bracket ensued. Bottoms up people...

The question asked queeps to NAME A FAMOUS BRIDGE? The survey's results were as follows...

  1. 19 - Tower Bridge (London Bridge)
  2. 17 - Golden Gate Bridge
  3. 11 - Brooklyn Bridge
  4. 02 - Tacoma Narrows Bridge
  5. 01 - Ha'penny Bridge

And shortly thereafter another Drink While You Think bracket was about to get underway....

Until a moment of controversy occurred when a couple of drinkers started before the Quizmaster gave them the cue to do so...

The only fair thing to do was to have a re-drink!! So we filled up the drinkers pints once again, and off they went...

This time the question asked: NAME A EUROPEAN CITY YOU WOULD LIKE TO VISIT?

The survey's top answers were:

  1. 12 - Paris
  2. 11 - London
  3. 08 - Prague
  4. 05 - Rome
  5. 03 - Amsterdam, Barcelona
  6. 02 - Dublin
  7. 01 - Numerous others
The final four of the DRINK WHILE YOU THINK competition would return later, as the final action of the day....

As we like see everyone get something at the Cup, Quizmaster also had a caption contest, in which teams had to fill in the bubble from the following photograph...

Some of the finalist's captions included...

  • Lady Di Another Day
  • No Mr. Obama, I expect you to die
  • Princess Diana was getting it one way or another
  • The heat between my legs isn't all I'm packing

But after careful consideration by the hosts, twas the caption "Double-0 saggy boobs reporting for duty," courtesy of Team Team, took the prize and a 8 pairs of tickets from the Milwaukee Rep for their troubles...

Elsewhere, there was more regular quizzin' to be had, as the Cup festivities ended with a MASSIVE VIDEO ROUND. Teams had to answer two "What happens next" questions, followed by a video montage - dubbed "things the Queen would never say" - in which they had to name as many movies as possible...

For those who weren't there, the answers shortly followed...

And so the results started filtering in and the QMs started tabulating the winners...

But while that was being taken care of, we had more drinking to do, so the FINAL FOUR of Drink While You Think was about to get underway...

The four finalists, each donning their finest bowler caps and Quizmaster tees, lined up, and were asked the question: BESIDES THE QUEEN, NAME A MEMBER OF THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY?

DRINK WHILE YOU THINK!!...

In order, the contestants answered one by one...

"Prince Charles"....

"Henry"....

"Prince William"....

"Prince Harry"....

The top answer, with 18 out of 50 respondents, was Prince William, which meant the Fuckin Wolverine gang would take away the 8 cases of beer, much to their delight...

The full list of responses were...

  1. 18 - Prince William
  2. 11 - Prince Harry
  3. 07 - Prince Charles
  4. 04 - Kate Middleton
  5. 02 - Price Phillip, Prince Edward, Pippa Middleton, Princess Diana
  6. 01 - Henry, Duchess of Cambridge

Anyhow, by this point, the Quizmasters had tabulated the results, with the Fuckin Wolverine gang above sneaking into the top three, and taking the bronze medals...

Let's just say Quizmaster Sir Pete Marshall was excited for them too!

Second spot was just one point above the Wolverine gang, as the team from Risky Quizness notched up 121 points from a possible 145 and a very resounding silver medal podium finish...

They also got a $100 Ale House gift card! Boom shacka lacka!

But it was perhaps written in stone, as four-time former Quizmaster Cup champions, Miltown Junks, showed us why they are Milwaukee's team to beat, by recording their fifth championship from a possible 8 cups and their fourth title in a row....

The Quizmasters are currently working on putting a super-team together to ensure they don't win another one again!!

And because we didn't want to see anyone go away empty handed, we just dished out free Star Wars calendars and other goodies, in what turned out to be a free-for-all on the stage...

Plus teams did get to collect their free bottle of Smirnoff vodka at the end too...

But one final prize was to be had, as the gang from Squad 666 may have discouraged others from dressing up this time. They were the only team to partake in our dress-up competition and they won the Box of Britishness for their supreme royal effort...

Our theory is that because their outfits are so awesome (and have been for the last three or so Quizmaster Cups) others just can't compete, and so don't bother altogether!

The box included all kinds of goodies, including Buckingham Palace chocolate, hand soap and even a shower cap sporting the royal crest!

Don't forget the Ali G Indahouse DVD too! And it's an actual British copy so won't work on U.S. DVD players. That's authentic people!

And just to encourage more teams to get involved in the dress-up fun, for future Quizmaster Cups we're thinking of implementing a points system for teams who ARE dressed up, with additional prizes for best dressed individuals as well as the best dressed team! Exact details for that are in the works!

And don't forget you can see more snaps from the day at our Facebook page!

Anyway, that sums up another glorious event, with Quizmaster Cup IX coming back to the Ale House in April 2013. Suggestions for dress-up themes for that event can be made in the comments section below!

Until next Cup Milwaukee, drink while you think...
