Our Survey Says.... R Kelly, You Have Gone Too Far! Quizmaster Cup Recap!

It was an exhilarating Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee this past weekend, as the Milwaukee Ale House welcomed Quizmaster and its followers through the doors to host the fifth edition of Milwaukee's biggest pub trivia tournament: Quizmaster Cup!....

(Please note that more photos can be found at our Facebook page!)

And as well as the coveted Quizmaster Cup trophy and medals, players were vying for $350 in Ale House bar tabs, 196 bottles (over $250-worth) of beer, Milwaukee Brewers tickets (provided by our friends at Bluprint), Milwaukee Rep tickets and free entry to the Bradford Beach Soccer League...

And the quizzers were ready to rack their brains over obscure movie trivia, whether Barack Obama was giving the finger or not, and all the rooms in a game of Cluedo!

And the Quizmaster had warned teams to come dressed to impress with the best dressed team being awarded the Box of Britishness. It seemed like Squad 666 got the memo...

Preview

And a few teams members from The Highbury also had their Bonnie and Clyde outfits together...

Preview

And so, at about 1 p.m. central standard time (that 7 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time!) the show got underway with an epic, yet challenging, Minute of Music Madness Round in which teams had to name as many songs and artists as they could....

And, oh, the audio and video did not match! For those who missed it, the answers were as follows...

And that opening round proved good news for both The Nessies of Shorewood and Dead Babies Will Save Michael J Fox, as they were the only two teams to ace that round with a maximum score of 20 points. But as we all know there was still a long way to go...

The attention of the trivia mob was briefly diverted for the drink while you think round - four brackets of chugging + trivia - with the winner from each semi-final moving on to the final four, with one quizzer eventually crowned the champ.

And so the stage was set at 1:30pm for the first bracket....

Preview

And the Quizmasters layed down the laws of the game, instructing all players not to pick up their pints until they heard the words "drink while you think..."

Preview

And in a new Family Feud-style (or Family Fortune's-style) question format, the first question was as follows:

"Name something that someone might see in the ocean that would cause them to get excited?"

Preview

Drink While You Think!!!...

Preview

In that round the top answer turned out to be a shark (not "people having sex" as Quizmaster Pete Marshall had said when he was surveyed!) and one player moved on to the final four.

The show rolled on though, and Quizmaster founder Ryan Wickens was joined by fellow QM Sam W. and former Quizmaster Patrick Rich - who was called out of retirement for the event, as the other regular hosts were unavailable on the day...

Preview

And it was good to see many familiar faces in the crowd, none more so that #RecordBreaking (a combination of Trinity's Team Team and the Brat House's Firefoxes)....

Preview

They were joined by An Idiot and A Broad towards the front of the stage....

Preview

Both teams finished in the middle of the pack, just a few points apart in the end.

Elsewhere the trivia carnage continued with the lightning round proving tricky (countdown clock alert!) even for the most trivially-unchallenged teams...

Preview

More drink while you think then ensured, and another line of contestants queued up to chug and answer...

"And our survey says..."

Another quizzer made it to the final four, and the Quizmaster Cup was nearing its conclusion.

But as ever, the Quizmasters like to award Milwaukee for being both smart and funny, so a caption contest was on the cards, with three captions providing three prizes for the onlooking crowd...

Preview

Teams simply had to write captions in the spaces provided. With the best captions listed below:

Caption 1:
  • Yep, that's a bull elephant
  • Got Semen?
  • Being a vegetarian I need to seek out alternative means of protein.
  • So is this what they mean by Cream City?
  • Love Means Never Having to Wear Goggles
  • R Kelly, You've Gone too Far this Time - WINNER

Caption 2:
  • "I'll have what he's having" (talking about #1)
  • What do you mean 3 dudes 1 cup?
  • Blimey! I'm glad I am not the bloke in picture #1 - WINNER
Caption 3:
  • FUCK!
  • S'Up!!!
  • Is this how you get to the Underground Railroad
  • Nope...No Diamonds Down Here
  • **Drawing of a Giant Penis** - WINNER
And for those who can't envision the illustration from the winner's of caption 3, it was as follows...

Preview

That was courtesy of When Doves Cry who would finish in a commendable fifth place overall in the end...

Preview

And it was Assume the Position who won the Milwaukee Rep tickets...

Preview

But the jokes were then put aside as the massive video round ensued with 27 points on the line! Teams had to identify the answers to two "what happens next" questions and then name as many movies as they could in the "how not to seduce someone" video question...

And the answers again...

And so, while a couple of the QMs tallied up the final scores, there was still some drinking business to take care of, in the Drink While You Think final four!

The quizzical four lined up, and following the question was asked: "which country would you hate to win a trip to?" They drank their hearts away....

Preview

"Did I spill??"

Preview

And the drinking aspect of the game was closely contested, although a bit of spillage meant that one competitor was offered the first guess.

Although in a twist of fate, following the first three drinkers answers of Somalia, North Korea and Vietnam (countries they'd hate to win a trip to, that is), it was the fourth and final drinker - who answered with Iraq - that had the top answer (we surveyed 50 people) and took home the 8 cases of beer!!!!

And the Box of Britishness was still available, although given their awesome attire, the foregone conclusion was that Squad 666 would take that prize. And they did just that, whipping out some British underwear for their glory moment...

Preview

But then the real business got underway as the Quizmasters announced the winner's from Quizmaster Cup V!

In the end 22 teams and over 140 people were involved and vying for the gold medals and trophy, but it would be Coitus Interuptus, who made silver medal finishes at both Quizmaster Cups III and IV that would take the bronze medal on the day...

Preview

A solid effort from them given that they had been out of quizzing action for a few months.

They were outdone by one point for second place, as the Full-On Rapists (coz, ya know, if it ain't "full-on" it just doesn't count) took the silver medal and their first podium finish as the cup...

Preview

But it was Milwaukee quiz veterans Miltown Junks that proved their perennial trivia class in the end, finishing three points ahead of the nearest rival, taking their second Quizmaster Cup championship, after winning back at Quizmaster Cup III in 2010...

Preview

And in true Quizmaster Cup championship fashion they proceeded to drink their $200 bar tab winnings from the trophy....

Preview

And Quizmaster Pat Rich even got in on the act!....

Preview

More photos from the event can be found at our Facebook page and we apologize if we weren't able to get a photo of your team - it was a hectic day!

On behalf of all the QMs, Quizmaster founder and chief-question-creator Ryan would like to thank all the quizzers for coming out on the day and for their ongoing support of the Quizmaster brand. Without you he wouldn't be able to (work from home and) watch The Price Is Right and The Young and the Restless every morning (CBS, 11am, be there).

Thanks again, and the cogs for Quizmaster Cup VI are already turning!

Until next time Milwaukee, drink while you think...
