Forturne & Glory, Quiz Kids... Forturne & Glory! Quizmaster Cup X Recap...

Tuesday, August 12, 2014
Sunday August 10th, 2014 rolled around and 30 teams, almost 200 die-hard, pop culture-hungry queeps, rolled into Milwaukee's Lakefront Brewery for a special trivia showdown. And don't forget more photos from the event can be found at our Facebook page.

Quizmaster Cup was back after a long overdue absence of over a year. In that time Quizmaster HQ gave some thought to revamping the QM Cup model, this time out focusing on pop culture film, TV and music staples.

All the good stuff featured including Star Wars, LOTR, Harry Potter, Breaking Bad, Friends, Seinfeld, Anchorman, James Bond, Batman, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Back to the Future and more! It was truly a fanatical affair this Sunday night.

And besides a ton of prizes, chiefly donated by the Lakefront Brewery and our title sponsor Milwaukee Irish Fest, there was also the coveted Quizmaster Cup up for grabs...

Of course that stallion of a homo-sapien situated on the top of the cup reflects the image of all quizzers everywhere. Abs-Man we call him.

And the competition was fierce in the end with 30 teams vying for five top prizes. Ultimately teams had to break at least 100 points (from a possible 120) to make the cut, with 8 teams getting a three-digit score in the end.

In fifth place were trivia stalwarts from Risky Quizness, who notched up 107 points and took a box of Irish Fest goodies and a $50 gift card to Jack's American Pub...

Next up, just one point above them were Scrambled Eggs, also a seasoned veteran on the Quizmaster circuit, who also took some goodies and a $50 gift card to the Three Lions Pub....

They're getting closer to the top!! Watch out for these guys at future big events!

Second spot was a hot contest as two teams tied on 109 points, and so sudden death (a question about the usage of the f-word in The Big Lebowski) ensued.

Third place would go to Brewery Navigation Specialists, who took a prize pack and another $50 gift card...

However, they donated their free beer (part of their prize) to another team as they work at the Brewery and get delicious free Lakefront beer 7-days-a-week, 365-days-a-year. BRAVO!

You Got a Question, You Ask the 8-Ball won out in sudden death and took second spot, an excellent achievement...

And that meant that the trivia cluster-juggernaut-supreme that is Fuckin' Wolverine, a previous two-time Quizmaster Cup champion, took top spot with their smashing total of 111 points...

Something tells us that they were delighted with the win, particularly after telling our Quizmasters that pop culture "really isn't our forte."

Cocky bastards indeed!!

We want to thank the Lakefront Brewery for being an awesome (and rather spacious!) host and Irish Fest again for helping us put the event together. Don't forget we host quizzes at Irish Fest this Friday, Saturday and Sunday! Details on that here.

Quizmaster Cup will return in 2015, but until then watch this space on more specially-themed events, including Friends and Seinfeld quizzes before the year is up!!

Until next time Milwaukee, drink while you think...

Friday, July 25, 2014
Good news Wisconsin quiz kids!!

After a 15-month hiatus, Quizmaster is pleased to announce that Quizmaster Cup, Milwaukee's pub trivia tournament, returns on Sunday August 10th! (If you've got the info already, REGISTER HERE).

Given the recent success of our numerous specially-themed trivia events, this Quizmaster Cup is being dubbed the "pop culture edition." Expect fantastic questions from the topics listed above as well as Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, the Walking Dead, Lost and more!!!

This will mostly be a TV and movie quiz but will touch on other aspects of pop culture too!!

Quizmaster Cup FAQs

Do we pre-register, sign up online?
Yes. This is one of our few pre-registration quizzes. Based on the venue's seating arrangement, and for our convenience organizing the event, we're allowing teams to register in groups of 4, 6 or 8. No individual sign-ups this time out. Teams can REGISTER HERE.

Okay, how much is it?
$10 per person early bird special! Sign up online before the event and save. $15 at the door. Online registration will close Friday August 8th at 6 p.m., 48 hours before the event.

What's the seating arrangement?
A floor plan of the Lakefront Brewery can be seen below. Here's the deal:
  • Lakefront Brewery has seating for up to 240 people.
  • There is room for a minimum of 32 teams.
  • Tables in blue have room for 8 players (the limit for this event).
  • While tables in green seat 6.
  • Teams of four will likely share a larger (blue) table with another team of four.
  • Quizmaster will allocate tables to teams upon sign-up. The first teams to sign up will get the best seats (close to the stage and bar).

Can I wear a special outfit or costume?
Absolutely. Our sponsor for this event is Irish Fest, so we're encouraging any Irish-themed outfits. At the very least WEAR GREEN!!

What are the prizes?
We've lined up numerous prizes for this one. Of course, first place gets the coveted Quizmaster Cup trophy, plus we'll be giving away...

  • Irish Fest tickets
  • Lakefront Brewery beer & tour tickets
  • Gift cards to local Quizmaster pub venues
  • CDs, t-shirts and other random swag
  • FREE HUGS from the Quizmasters (okay, just kidding about that 'prize', but really we will be hugging freely).

Can people under 21 play?
We'll get back to you on that ASAP. Still waiting to hear from the venue. However, we suspect people under 21 will be allowed in.

Will Lakefront Brewery be serving food?
No. Unfortunately, the brewery usually only serves food on Friday night's and bringing in a caterer for this event would be quite an ordeal. Please take note and plan ahead.

What else?
Quiz veterans who've participated in previous Quizmaster Cup events should know that we've cut down on costs for this event (chiefly the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals we previously had), so we could pass the savings on to the quizzer. At previous Cups entry has been $20-$25, and this time around the $10-15 fee is much more modest. The more quizzers the merrier!!!

Howdy partner! A rockin' Quizmaster Cup IX recap, yee haw!!

Tuesday, May 21, 2013
It was a day of many first this past Sunday May 19th, as Quizmaster Cup, now in its ninth installment, made it's debut at Water Street's Red Rock Saloon. (And don't forget, there's more photos - about 100 of 'em - at our Facebook page!)

And with that in mind, Quizmaster had determined that it would be a COUNTRY-themed event, and the hosts certainly came dressed to impress for the big day of quizzing....

Don't f#@k with these Quizmasters!

And as with previous Quizmaster Cup showdowns, we weren't short of prizes as the trophy baked in the hot lights at the foot of the stage...

As you can see, the BOX OF BRITISHNESS (full of goodies and other crap from across the pond) was up for grabs - our best dressed team would take that home at the end of the day!

And additionally, we had a TON of booze to give away...

Each team would get a bottle of Smirnoff vodka or Southern Comfort, just for showing up!

And we had 5 cases of Coors Light to give away too! That would go to our finalists and winners of the "Drink While You Think" Competition!

And with over 100 of Milwaukee's finest queeps in attendance, it promised to be a battle for the ages!!

And while not all teams were dressed in their finest country attire, most teams did partake in the fun dress-up, as 10 points would be awarded to every group that were sporting "countries", however they wanted to interpret it...

That was former best-dressed winners, Squad 666, who put a fun spin on the country theme! Nice work guys!

In more stable (no pun intended) attire, five-time Quizmaster Cup champions, and strong favorites going into the event, Miltown Junks even took the time to grow mustaches for the big day...

Howdy, indeed!

And we welcomed in the gang from My Dixie Wrecked, who were also looking the bees knees on what was their Quizmaster Cup debut....

They got their fair share of booze too!

Anyway, the Quizmaster Cup got underway around 2pm with a NEW "Comical Commercials" video round, in which teams had to identify the products or brands shown in the video clip...

And for those who might have missed it, the answer shortly followed...

What a way to start the event!

That was followed by the first "Drink While You Think" bracket, in which team's representative  were asked a Family-Feud style question! The first question asked "Besides New York, name a city with a large population?"

Drink While You Think!!!

One female emerged from that first bracket of drinking, moving on to the final four later on!

In other news, we welcomed in Red Rock regulars and front-row queeps Scrambled Eggs, who are always having a good time at the Cup....

We also welcomed back the long-time crew from You Fucked Up, You Trusted Us...

Ranga Rumblers were also dressed to the nines...

And one of the other strong contenders for victory, Pluckers, had an interesting assortment of costumes among them...

They would win the Milwaukee Rep tickets following their response to the Caption Contest...

Teams had to list a caption in the box. Some of our faves included:

  • Oh Georgie, stuck between Iraq and a hard place again
  • I prefer bareback
  • 'Merica, dealing with bull shit since 1776
  • I hope Barbara doesn't mind a four-way
  • 8 seconds, try 8 years!

But the winning caption was...

"Still better than being between Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld"

Elsewhere, the gang from Triviavenagers were perhaps a dark horse (no pun intended, again!) in the running for silverware on the day....

Drink While You Think bracket two ensued, and more guzzling commenced...

We also welcomed in long-time Quizmaster veterans (from back in the day at the original Britinn), Dead Babies Will Save Michael J Fox...

Great to see them after a long sabbatical!

And in a Quizmaster Cup first, the QUEEL Round featured, adding some extra zest to the scoring...

We also said 'ello to Perfect Pints, one of the few teams not dressed up! Shocker...

But they drank a lot, and were tonguing each other apparently, so we don't care.

Runners-up from Quizmaster Cup VIII, Risky Quizness were hoping to go one better this time around...

Also, another teams that was dressed fantastically were the Firefoxes....

Throughout the day we encouraged queeps to post and tag their best photo(s) from the event, with our favorite one winning Milwaukee Brewers tickets!

Very creative stuff. We like the black and white!

In other non-dress-up news, Team Low Brow International were ruing the day they decided not to get their cowboy boots out, because if they did they would have finished in the top three...

Something tells us country really isn't their thing!

Anyway, the showed rolled on, with a quick-fire lightning round, a couple of wager categories and the final massive video round...

Two "What happens next?" questions ensued plus the "greatest movie insults" montage, with the answers as follows...

And while the hosts tallied up the final scores, we still had a "DRINK WHILE YOU THINK" final four to contest, with five cases of beer to dish out!

The four finalists lined-up, ready to neck their second pint of the afternoon...

The question asked... "Name one of the seven dwarfs?"

Drink While You Think!....

Paul of Squad 666 answered "Dopey," which happened to be the top answer....

He walked away with two cases of Coors Light, and wasn't gonna stop to pick 'em up...

The three other finalists did take home a case each for their efforts, so plenty of booze went around!

And so on to the big results! After all was said and done - nine rounds, two video categories, over 150 points up for grabs, the crew from Fuckin Wolverine notched up a massive 143 points, and took their second championship since Quizmaster Cup  IV in 2010...

Even Quizmaster Ryan W. got in on the act at the end....

Fantastic work from them!

We want to thank all our queeps for coming out for a truly memorable day at Red Rock! Check our Facebook page for even more pictures from the event! We'll be formulating plans for a MASSIVE QUIZMASTER CUP X (set for this fall) very soon!

Until the next Cup Milwaukee, drink while you think...

Quizzard Alert!! A quiz fit for a king! Quizmaster Cup VIII recap!

Tuesday, November 13, 2012
It was another day for the (middle) ages at the Milwaukee Ale House this Sunday November 11th, 2012, as over 100 of Wisconsin's most noble queeps, as well as numerous ruffians, converged upon Quizmaster Cup VIII, all with dreams of taking away the coveted chalice and gold medals...

(And don't forget that more photos from the day - about 140 of them - can be found at our Facebook page)!

As well as the the medals and trophy (which were forged in the fires of Mount Doom), Quizmaster was also offering teams the chance to win cases of Milwaukee Brewing Co. beer, Smirnoff vodka (with each team getting a bottle for just being there), Star Wars calenders (courtesy of ThinkGeek), as well as the fabled BOX OF BRITISHNESS, which contained royal goodies (literally!) from across the pond...

And in what has been the case for most Quizmaster Cups to date, the hosts encouraged teams to come dressed up in their best ROYAL attire for a chance to win the Box of Britishness. The Quizmasters had a medieval theme going themselves...

Bibbidi-Bobiddi-BOO!!

Once such team - Squad 666, who never disappoint, came dressed up as a royal flush and even had their very own dealer...

Oh, what a bunch of cards! ZING!

One of them, seamstress extraordinaire, Sun Dunfee, even had a custom Quizmaster Ace playing card...

Hopefully they had an ace in the bag to help them out with the day's epic game.

That reminds us, amazing prizes and outfits aside, there was a day of quizzin' (to the death) to be had....

And so the Cup got underway like a puff of smoke with the MINUTE OF MUSIC MADNESS round - now the customary way to start the tournament...

Teams has to name as many songs and artists as they could, with the answers being revealed (via video) just a few minutes later....

That round was from a maximum total of 20 points, with no team able to score a perfect 100 percent, despite the multiple Swedish House Mafia fans in tha hizzle!!

Teams Miltown Junks and Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's a Blatant Attempt to Curry Favour with the British Judge scored the highest in that section with 18 points each, while Quizmaster Cup newcomers Many things can be preserved in alcohol; dignity is not one of them got a taste of the day's affair taking in 10 points in round one...

Following the opening video round, the first Drink While You Think bracket got underway, in which a member from four teams had to chug a whole beer before they could answer a Family Feud-style question....

The first questions asked drinkers to NAME A FOOD THAT IS GREEN?

Following Quizmaster's very own survey of 50 people, the top answers were:

  1. 18 - Broccoli
  2. 08 - Green beans
  3. 07 - Spinach
  4. 04 - Peas
  5. 03 - Asparagus, Apples
  6. 02 - Lettuce
  7. 01 - Avocado, Grapes, Peppers, Cabbage, Lime

Team Fuckin' Wolverine's drinkin' solider moved on to the Final Four (having got the top answer) for a chance to win the 8 cases of Milwaukee Brewing Co. beer later on...

More quizzin' resumed with the gang from Perfect Pints scoring pretty strongly in the lightning round...

And then another drink while bracket ensued. Bottoms up people...

The question asked queeps to NAME A FAMOUS BRIDGE? The survey's results were as follows...

  1. 19 - Tower Bridge (London Bridge)
  2. 17 - Golden Gate Bridge
  3. 11 - Brooklyn Bridge
  4. 02 - Tacoma Narrows Bridge
  5. 01 - Ha'penny Bridge

And shortly thereafter another Drink While You Think bracket was about to get underway....

Until a moment of controversy occurred when a couple of drinkers started before the Quizmaster gave them the cue to do so...

The only fair thing to do was to have a re-drink!! So we filled up the drinkers pints once again, and off they went...

This time the question asked: NAME A EUROPEAN CITY YOU WOULD LIKE TO VISIT?

The survey's top answers were:

  1. 12 - Paris
  2. 11 - London
  3. 08 - Prague
  4. 05 - Rome
  5. 03 - Amsterdam, Barcelona
  6. 02 - Dublin
  7. 01 - Numerous others
The final four of the DRINK WHILE YOU THINK competition would return later, as the final action of the day....

As we like see everyone get something at the Cup, Quizmaster also had a caption contest, in which teams had to fill in the bubble from the following photograph...

Some of the finalist's captions included...

  • Lady Di Another Day
  • No Mr. Obama, I expect you to die
  • Princess Diana was getting it one way or another
  • The heat between my legs isn't all I'm packing

But after careful consideration by the hosts, twas the caption "Double-0 saggy boobs reporting for duty," courtesy of Team Team, took the prize and a 8 pairs of tickets from the Milwaukee Rep for their troubles...

Elsewhere, there was more regular quizzin' to be had, as the Cup festivities ended with a MASSIVE VIDEO ROUND. Teams had to answer two "What happens next" questions, followed by a video montage - dubbed "things the Queen would never say" - in which they had to name as many movies as possible...

For those who weren't there, the answers shortly followed...

And so the results started filtering in and the QMs started tabulating the winners...

But while that was being taken care of, we had more drinking to do, so the FINAL FOUR of Drink While You Think was about to get underway...

The four finalists, each donning their finest bowler caps and Quizmaster tees, lined up, and were asked the question: BESIDES THE QUEEN, NAME A MEMBER OF THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY?

DRINK WHILE YOU THINK!!...

In order, the contestants answered one by one...

"Prince Charles"....

"Henry"....

"Prince William"....

"Prince Harry"....

The top answer, with 18 out of 50 respondents, was Prince William, which meant the Fuckin Wolverine gang would take away the 8 cases of beer, much to their delight...

The full list of responses were...

  1. 18 - Prince William
  2. 11 - Prince Harry
  3. 07 - Prince Charles
  4. 04 - Kate Middleton
  5. 02 - Price Phillip, Prince Edward, Pippa Middleton, Princess Diana
  6. 01 - Henry, Duchess of Cambridge

Anyhow, by this point, the Quizmasters had tabulated the results, with the Fuckin Wolverine gang above sneaking into the top three, and taking the bronze medals...

Let's just say Quizmaster Sir Pete Marshall was excited for them too!

Second spot was just one point above the Wolverine gang, as the team from Risky Quizness notched up 121 points from a possible 145 and a very resounding silver medal podium finish...

They also got a $100 Ale House gift card! Boom shacka lacka!

But it was perhaps written in stone, as four-time former Quizmaster Cup champions, Miltown Junks, showed us why they are Milwaukee's team to beat, by recording their fifth championship from a possible 8 cups and their fourth title in a row....

The Quizmasters are currently working on putting a super-team together to ensure they don't win another one again!!

And because we didn't want to see anyone go away empty handed, we just dished out free Star Wars calendars and other goodies, in what turned out to be a free-for-all on the stage...

Plus teams did get to collect their free bottle of Smirnoff vodka at the end too...

But one final prize was to be had, as the gang from Squad 666 may have discouraged others from dressing up this time. They were the only team to partake in our dress-up competition and they won the Box of Britishness for their supreme royal effort...

Our theory is that because their outfits are so awesome (and have been for the last three or so Quizmaster Cups) others just can't compete, and so don't bother altogether!

The box included all kinds of goodies, including Buckingham Palace chocolate, hand soap and even a shower cap sporting the royal crest!

Don't forget the Ali G Indahouse DVD too! And it's an actual British copy so won't work on U.S. DVD players. That's authentic people!

And just to encourage more teams to get involved in the dress-up fun, for future Quizmaster Cups we're thinking of implementing a points system for teams who ARE dressed up, with additional prizes for best dressed individuals as well as the best dressed team! Exact details for that are in the works!

And don't forget you can see more snaps from the day at our Facebook page!

Anyway, that sums up another glorious event, with Quizmaster Cup IX coming back to the Ale House in April 2013. Suggestions for dress-up themes for that event can be made in the comments section below!

Until next Cup Milwaukee, drink while you think...
