How the Game Works

Friday, September 10, 2010
Format:
By now we're all familiar with the concept of bar trivia or "pub quizzing". Our format follows that of the old school English pub quizzes in which all teams receive pen and paper to write their answers on. Of course, this is a live-hosted, interactive trivial game, where our Quizmaster's personalities are put to work to keep you entertained.

We tailor our quizzes with our awesome and unique "picture sheets", with one round on the quiz featuring a visual clue that goes alongside it (and we promise that we have the BEST picture questions on Planet Earth!) At the end of the game teams switch sheets (it's elementary indeed) and grade each other as the Quizmaster reveals the answers. Of course, any discrepancies or math errors are taken up with the host who can adjust the final score. After which ALL the team names are read (with the best one receiving a prize at most venues) and winners are announced.

Rounds:
The quiz is divided into 6 five-question rounds, making up a total of 30 questions. Many questions might be worth multiple points though (like, what four states meet at the Four Corners?)

Categories include:
    - History
    - Geography
    - Music
    - Film
    - TV
    - Sports
    - Advertising Slogans
    - Art and Literature
    - Fashion and Design
    - Food and Drink
    - Film Quote Clips
    - Music Clips
    - Science and Nature
    - Toys and Games
    - TV Theme Songs
    - Useless Knowledge

We also like to throw in a couple of wager categories and other interesting twists to make it different every time you play!

    How long does it take?
Each quiz lasts approximately two hours, depending on the venue and the types of questions on any given night. We also offer an abbreviated format for private and corporate events. Please inquire with us via email about hosting trivia at your private event.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does it cost anything to play?
Usually it's $1 per person to play, although there are exceptions. This is exclusively a TIP for your Quizmaster host, so don't be stingy – all the money goes to them!

And although it's cheap as chips, you better be buying food and drinks (preferably booze!) Just drinking water is not cool!! It's no big secret how we operate --- we drive business to our venues, so if everyone who shows up just drinks water and eats chips and salsa, we get fired.

    Is there a team-size limit?
Yes. In the best interests of the game, teams are limited to 8 players. But we hate to break up friends (professionally speaking, that is), so if teams do come with more than 8 people, they can split into two teams or take the one-point deduction for each additional player they have. And some venues do allow players of all ages to participate but we advise that you call the venue ahead of time just to be sure.

Can we use cell phones for help?
No! Cell phone use is strictly prohibited!!! The use of cellular devices to "phone a friend" or surf the internet for answers during the quiz is strictly foul play and disqualification will be enforced on teams using such methods.

When does the game take place?
As we operate our unique trivia game as a partnership with some of the area's coolest bar venues, it varies depending on the location. Check the schedule for details, but most venues host Quizmaster on a weekly basis; on the same day at the same time.

Do we shout out any answers?
No! Please do not shout out the answers! Write 'em down and we'll grade them later on.

So, what in it for us?
As well as about two-hours of action packed quizzin' fun, teams can actually win stuff. Although our prizes aren't quite The Price is Right-worthy, most venues offer bars tabs for first place, second place and best team name (or the "people's prize" as we like to call it). Exact amounts vary with each bar, so check out venue blogs for specifics.

Does my team register in advance or not?
No. Just show up! Remember the team limit of 8, otherwise if you're a lone ranger we won't judge you (although others might!)

    Is the quiz hard?
Well, like we say: it's not hard when you know the answers! We try to customize rounds and questions that are interesting, thought provoking and entertaining. We hope our questions provide good fodder for conversation between you and your team mates, and that you able to answer at least half of them correctly!

    How to win?
For best results, try to rally a gang of troops that are diverse in age, gender and life experience (and seeing as are owner and chief question-creator is British, perhaps nationality too!) We try to make our questions as diverse as possible so whether your 21 or 101 you have a chance to muster an intelligible answer.

Can I quiz more than one night a week?
As far as quizzing multiple times a week, knock yourself out, because questions are different no matter what day of the week you play!

    Bar Owners: Hire Us!

    Friday, September 10, 2010
Our business model is no big secret. We offer a fun and quirky pub quiz that appeals to beer drinkers of all kinds and brings them back week after week, again and again. Most of our queeps (that's quizzing terminology for "quiz peeps") are educated young professionals with nice jobs, and extra money to throw around. Turns out they like to show off their smarts and spend their money at the same time! We put on quizzes that appeal to the masses, and our cost-effective rates and service are a no-brainer for pubs and bars everywhere.

One thing we specialize in is themed nights (think pop culture staples like Harry Potter, Disney, Star Wars and more), that really increase sales for our venues. See what themed are all about at the video below...

How long does it take to build up a consistent player base?
Well, this really varies depending on the venue. Usually it's somewhere between 1-6 months, as we all know word-of-mouth is still the best way to get people through the door. Once your crowd it established, they will keep coming back.

What kind of numbers should we expect?
Our clients don't share that info with us, although we'd like to think it boosts business three, four or five times more than they were doing before us.

How do you promote the quiz?
Most of our promotion is viral. As well as constantly posting and tagging on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, we often advertise on such sites, as well as frequent email blasts to local followers. Additionally, we can not stress enough how important it is for our venues to promote in-house, so we provide plenty of posters to our venues to attract those people already coming into you bar.

What does the venue need to provide for Quizmaster?
Not a lot. We provide all the materials for the game, including answer sheets, pens, in-house promo materials and we coordinate with you for a host. We usually run our sound through a venue's existing house speaker system, although circumstances can vary and in rare cases we bring in our own gear. If your venue already has a microphone and iPod jack hooked up then that makes our job that much easier!

Besides that, just ensure posters are up, the bar is stocked and the staff are ready to roll on quiz night.

I could whip out some questions myself? Why should I hire Quizmaster?
Yes, you could, and we dare you to! But coming up with 30 thought-provoking, fun and entertaining questions every week, including a picture sheet and audio clips, is harder that it sounds. Besides actually running a bar, and all that comes with it, it's probably best to leave the professional quizzing to us.

What's the best day and time to do it?
That's really up to you guys. Most venues opt for a typically-slower week night, as on weekends they just don't need us to bring the bodies in. Our most popular nights tend to be Tuesdays or Wednesdays, but having said that you might want to draft us in on Saturdays before or after "the rush!"

Alright, I'm almost convinced... how much?
Well, that's the million dollar question. Don't worry we don't quite charge that much, and prefer not to disclose such information online. Rates can vary depending on a venue's specific needs.
